The George Development Group

Art George along with his wife, Gwen George, formed The George Development Group (TGDG) in 2014 after his retirement from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI). The GDG provides one on one career coaching and life mentoring to professionals and aspiring professionals in the corporate and business world.  We deliver presentations to groups/organizations on how to build great teams, how to be a great leader and how to have a great career. In addition, we provide customized motivational speeches to groups/organizations. Art and Gwen leverage their combined almost 60 years of experience from their careers in the corporate and business world.

Prior to his retirement Art spent 30 years at TI.  Art’s last position was senior vice president and manager over Texas Instruments’ (TI’s) Analog Engineering Operations(AEO). Formed in June 2010, his AEO team was responsible for providing on-going engineering support and driving down production costs across TI’s portfolio of ten’s of thousands of analog integrated circuit (IC) products. Prior to the formation of AEO there was no centralized corporate level product engineering team at TI.  Art brought to the role unique insight gained through a variety of operational positions, where he managed or was involved in the development of thousands of new IC products.  The group reduced product cost by >$100M a year for three consecutive years after the AEO group was staffed.

Prior to the AEO role, Art was the P&L manager for TI’s High-Performance Analog (HPA) business unit, which is a billion dollar+ revenue division of TI that develops analog signal chain integrated circuit devices including data converters, amplifiers, interface and clock products. TI is a market leader in all of these areas. Previously, Art managed the High-Performance Linear business unit, which included TI's catalog amplifier and interface ICs. He was heavily involved in the integration of Burr-Brown, which significantly enhanced TI’s capabilities in high-performance signal chain IC products.

Art led the acquisition of several companies for TI including Chipcon, a leader in low-power radio frequency (RF) technology, as well as directing the acquisition of Integrated Circuit Designs and Innovative Design Solutions, which expanded TI’s design resources in low-power RF and high-speed analog, respectively.

Art started his career at TI in 1984 in Logic Operations as a test engineer. Early in his career, he created a worldwide team to document and install standardized evaluation techniques for design verification of new digital logic ICs in diverse locations, such as Texas, Germany, Japan and Malaysia. These were the first worldwide standards on how this engineering work on logic IC’s, should be done, that was ever created at TI.

He is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1983. In 2007, he received the university’s Outstanding Alumni Engineering Achievement Merit Award at the school’s 50th anniversary. He also earned a master’s degree in engineering management in 1990 from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Art has been honored at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards conference twice as one of the 100 Most Important Blacks in Technology. The awards are sponsored by The Council of the Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and US Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine.  He has also received the Career Achievement in Industry Award from the National Society of Black Engineers.

Art is passionate about building up the next generation of engineers and actively participates in engineering recruitment, talent development and diversity initiatives on behalf of TI. He is a frequent guest speaker at those universities and at many Dallas area professional organization talent development events

He was elected to the board of directors of the Nordson Corporation (NDSN) in February of 2012.  He serves on the Nordson board and he is a member of their board’s audit committee.

He was elected to the board of directors of the Axcelis Corporation (ACLS) in May of 2014. He serves on the Axcelis board and he is a member of the board’s compensation committee and he is the chair of their technology committee.

He was elected Chair of the SMU Lyle School of Engineering Executive Board in 2016

He lives in the Dallas area with his wife Gwen George and he has a daughter Tiffany George who is Media Arts & Animation graduate of the Art Institute of Dallas who also lives in the area.

TESTIMONIALS

Yanli — "Art has been my mentor for 10 years. He changed my life. 10 years ago, I was a junior engineer and did not speak well. Today, I am recognized as a confident, great leader and motivational speaker. It is all because of his inspiration. I still remember one of mentoring meetings I had with him. I told him that my English was not good and trying to improve it. Art looked at me and said to me very seriously:” your English is good enough. I have never had any problem of understanding you. You can’t live in fear.” That conversation changed me forever. From there, I am heading down a path to be a great leader. I am never afraid to speak up, never afraid to take lead and never doubt about myself anymore. Art has become my lifetime mentor and friend. I will continue seeking his advice and guidance whenever I have a challenge and need help."

Lauren Pilliner — "I have had the genuine pleasure of being mentored by Art George for the past 9 years. He has helped truly plan and execute my career. With his guidance I have been able to navigate not only moving from engineering to marketing but also changing companies and moving up the corporate ladder successfully . Art has helped me clearly focus on my optimal career path and ascend the corporate ladder faster than most. Although enough can not be said about Art’s professional monitorship the thing that makes knowing Art so wonderful is that he truly has taken time to get to know and mentor me as a whole person. He has taken the time to understand me and my goals and priorities not only as a marketing executive but also as a wife and mother. He has helped me understand what I wanted next and helped me create plans to obtain my goals.

Kemi Ogun — "I have had the privilege to be a mentee under Art George’s leadership during my career at Texas Instruments. I am now a Senior HR Manager at YUM Brands, where I am truly enjoying every moment. Virtually every important decision I’ve made about my future career potential had its origin in what I learned from people I respected, like Art George. In turn, I was able to follow my dreams and passions and live in my purpose. Art wasn’t just a mentor to me; he was a friend, a confidant, an individual I trusted and truly admired. He challenged me and pushed me to think bigger and bolder. He allowed me to make mistakes but was always there to steer me in the right direction. I am truly grateful for my friendship with Art George."

David — "I met Art when he was the manager of a business that my factory served.  From the moment we met I could tell he was genuine and would speak the truth.  As my time in Tucson drew to a close the only option I was afforded was to come back to Dallas as an individual contributor versus a manager.  I still had expectations that I would be recognized and have another opportunity in the managerial arena.  I began to focus on what could have been the issue that caused me to be pushed aside, and I had to start taking a long look at myself, my career, and my next steps.  Having a huge respect for Art, I asked him to be my mentor for guidance and insights.

I had mentors in the past, but those mentors supported my growth within the manufacturing organization.  Now I sit as an individual contributor trying to figure what would be my next steps.  As I met with Art we began to explore my thoughts and concerns about my role.  Each month we discussed what went well, what did not, and how did I react to situations that were presented to me.  He helped me dissect each one and think about what I could do to make the most of each of them.  In turn, not only help myself but help others.

As our monthly encounters continued he helped me realize that sometimes bad things happen to good people, how we react will define who we really are.  He made me realize that I had been placing value on the wrong things; salary, position…  It is not to say that those things cannot be rewarding, but alone they can have the opposite effect that one desires…a meaningful career."

Manjusha — "Art has been a mentor to me for over 3 years. When I first joined Art's team, I was a frustrated test manager with a lot of ideas which if implemented had the potential to make a significant impact to test cost.  My frustration stemmed from my inability to connect with people at an emotional level and communicate in ways that they could understand. Art recognized this and mentored me and provided practical

tools to be more effective in my communication style. In the last 3 years, I have seen the biggest personal growth I have had in my 14 year career and I would attribute it all to Art's coaching and

mentoring. He has been a constant source of inspiration and I have been fortunate enough to also see him in action. He definitely practices what he preaches. I no longer feel frustrated or limited and I am able to effectively communicate at different levels in the organization to get buy in and support. It has been a life changing experience to say the least and I couldn't thank him enough."

Joel Dobson, Statistician — "I first met Art George when he gave a speech about the importance of investing in yourself and your career.  At the end, he offered to mentor anyone in the audience.  At the time, I was skeptical, but I made an appointment to see him.  To my surprise and pleasure, Art was serious.  He has mentored me for several years since then.  Because I am a statistician, working in a supporting and consulting career, Art taught me the value of having a personal marketing plan and building up my personal brand name, inside and outside of TI. Despite my tendency to be an introvert, Art encouraged me to reach beyond my comfort zone.  With Art’s help, I became accredited as a professional statistician.  I have become an avid blogger. I emulate Art by giving speeches inside and outside of TI.  I used to be satisfied with just having a speech accepted for presentation, but Art taught me to reach higher.  Now, I want my speech to be the one people talk about after the conference is over.  Recently, for the first time, I was asked to be an invited speaker at a conference of the American Statistical Association, which once would have intimidated me. Given Art’s guidance, I am able to approach opportunities with more courage and confidence.  Every person can name a dozen or a score of other people who were the primary influencers in their life. For me, Art has earned a place on my short list of life changers.  You would be wise to seek his advice."

Ingrid Jenkins — "Art's advice and encouragement as a mentor have been invaluable to me. His suggested resources and candid approach to asking questions have helped guide me through key career decisions. I am personally inspired by his authentic leadership and coaching style. Most importantly he demonstrates genuine care for both individual development as well as professional."

Timothy Kinnard — "My name is Tim Kinnard and I am an Engineering Branch Manager at one of TI's most advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities.  I met Art George ~ 11 years ago during an offsite event hosted by my Factory Manager at the time.  Art was the guest speaker during that event and his energy and passion greatly impressed me.  After he finished his presentation and could not wait to meet him and ask for a follow up discussion.  Of course Art agreed to meet with me and a connection was established that positively impacted my career.  Over several "sessions"  Art taught me the critical importance of establishing a "brand" for my work.  He stressed that achieving results opens the door of opportunity and building a network of people that know you and what you are good at will help you advance in any industry.  I credit Art's mentoring and leadership insights with helping me to achieve multiple career moves that have positioned me perfectly for my dream role of Factory Manager."

Eric L. Williams, Operations Director — "I had the pleasure to meet Art in 2005 at a customer meeting in New York.  While I was aware of his position as Senior Vice President at our company, our paths had never actually crossed prior.  I was immediately struck with his sensible approach to the customer's needs and his calm presence throughout the discussion.  I made a point to introduce myself and have enjoyed a multi-year relationship with Art as a friend, mentor and ultimately, as my direct supervisor.  It is often said that great leaders lead by example and that their core values allow them to be effective at all levels.  Humility, patience, and selflessness are core values I’ve witnessed in Art and just part of what makes him special.  Every career has its peaks and valleys.  Art's wise counsel has served me well through the highs and lows of my career.  For that, I am forever grateful."

Hubie Payne — "I had the pleasure of working with Art George for several years while we were both at Texas Instruments. During this time he was kind enough to serve as a mentor, significantly building my leadership skills and preparing me for several difficult professional situations. Arts ability to connect with people is legendary. He has a breadth and depth of experience in both engineering and management that gives him a unique perspective. He did not solve my issues for me but guided and challenged me with common sense questions, sound analysis and an objective approach that was very effective. Always constructively focusing on the future, with an unwavering faith that the goal will be achieved, problems will be solved, and winning must be crafted in an ethical, fair way. Art’s energy is infectious and his knowledge priceless. His teaching has armed me for the future; I only wish I had met him sooner."

Kausalya — "Art is one of the best leaders that I have ever known and he has been my mentor for a number of years now. I am a University Marketing Manager at TI and his guidance has helped me tremendously over the years that I have been at TI and I attribute my success at TI to him. He is truly an amazing leader who leads by example. As my mentor, I have had several discussions with him ranging from dealing with crucial conversations when the stakes are high, how to approach a new role when I am looking at that as a stepping stone for future success, developing into a person with influencing capabilities and of course fear of overcoming public speaking. For every one of the above he has given me valuable inputs that has helped me in several situations. He is one of the best speakers at TI and he has moved several of us to tears by the mere power of his speech. Of course over the years, our friendship has blossomed and I look up to him as a great person who genuinely cares for people and one who wishes only the very best for others. He has touched so many people in very positive ways externally and internally. He is one of the best mentors one can have and I have to say that I am truly fortunate for that huge blessing in my life. I will be at his door the very next day after he retires and starts his new company where he is hoping to continue his passion of developing people and making leaders. I would highly recommend him to my friends who I think would benefit greatly by having him for a mentor."

Rashunda — "The role of a mentor is to provide guidance and leadership in a capacity that allows the mentee to learn from a experienced individual, while also presenting challenges that not only grow the mentee professionally but from a personal perspective as well.  It is a continual process that requires dialogue and commitment from both parties.  The mentorship that Art has provided to me over the past few years has afforded me the opportunity grow in ways that have been beneficial to my professional career and instrumental in my personal growth.  From a professional perspective, Art has challenged me to step outside the bounds of my introverted comfort zone and build relationships and networks with the expectation that I sustain and continue to build on the progress that I have made.  From a personal perspective, Art has offered advice that has allowed me to step back from situations and make sound choices, remembering to always put God first.  There aren’t many people in corporate America, especially at a management level, who are willing to share their faith but Art breaks the mold and has been an imperative part of my spiritual growth.    The impact that Art has made on my life is often times validated by the remarks of others in terms of the progress they see in my development.  I don’t think I could have asked for a better mentor than Art who has always served as a voice of reason, a sounding board and a confidant that respects confidentiality of our conversations.  Any individual who is looking for open and honest dialogue and feedback would find all they are looking for in Art."

Meagan Pollock, Product Engineer — "In 2002, Art George began a mentor role with me during my first co-op at Texas Instruments. Over the years, as a co-op student, full-time engineer, and through later career transitions, Art has become a friend, advocate, and sponsor for many opportunities that have advanced my career and personal growth.

We began by discussing books on leadership, and moved towards sessions where he would offer advice, counseling, and guidance on navigating specific work place scenarios and developing strategies for reaching my goals.  Art has a keen sense and skill for navigating the workplace, and has helped me to develop and advance a similar skill set. His calm, and thoughtful reflections have consistently supported my individual development.

Art George is incredibly trustworthy, honest, and genuine, and his personal style is reflected in his coaching,  As an advocate and sponsor, he has reached out to his network several times to help connect me to people and opportunities that would help me to achieve my goals. Art is an excellent coach and mentor, and I would recommend him to anyone seeking to grow personally or professionally, and to anyone aiming take their career or life to the next level. "

Mary Ann Simmons — "Art George has proven to be a very key component in accelerating my professional and personal growth. Through the mentoring relationship, we were able to make the emotional connection which led to building an honest, open, and trusting relationship.  Through Art’s wisdom, expertise and experience, I was able to identify and pursue developmental opportunities that I needed in order to achieve my goals.  He helped me to recognize business risks and career risks; that is, major mistakes that could negatively affect my position or my department.  Art also provided corrective feedback in private and offered useful suggestions for me to try next time.  He has been an inspiration for me, and we have built a friendship and lasting relationship.  Art George is a leader that brings out the best in others."

T. Bowman, Supply Chain Management — "It is a rare find when personal development can be guided by such an accomplished individual possessing an authentic compassion for mentoring others. Art George is an amazing leader with a gift of wisdom who recognizes the magic of what already exists within each of us. He not only helps us rediscover how to unleash our potential, he then encourages us to take big bold steps to achieve success. I was first introduced to Art’s leadership style through a motivational speech he delivered emphasizing the foundational concepts on talent utilization. An encounter with Art is invigorating and gives spark to exploration of new possibilities within strategic positioning.

Art’s customized approach to coaching meets you exactly where you are, and then leads you as you begin to take reigns of charting your destiny. There are pivotal junctures in our lives requiring critical decisions of impact. Through his innate ability to patiently listen for understanding of just how he can help you, Art skillfully guides you through an evolution of perspective equipping you to confidently handle moments of contemplation. He reminds us of how great we can become when leveraging our unique talents and effectively celebrating them to maximize competitive advantage. No matter what stage of your career or life’s journey you may be, Art’s mentoring style and its messaging is timeless."

Tuli Dake, Design Manager — " Where do I start? I could write about my first-hand experience of Art’s generosity to support a deprived community in rural Ghana, his unbelievable knack of identifying good talent and character, his precocious belief and support of causes way before they become the “in thing”, like the Africa University Relations Program, his humble and confident nature, but I will focus on the one comment he has made countless of times that has inspired a lot of people, including myself.

I call it the “And” doctrine. This is probably the first time he is hearing it called that. Art is probably not aware the effect this doctrine has had on countless people and propelled them to achieve great things both in their personal and professional lives.

 Paraphrasing, the doctrine states,

“The difference between a good person and a great person, is the power of AND”.

A good person confines themselves to the boundary of trade-offs, but a great person looks beyond trade-offs. They can achieve perfect execution AND on time delivery, offer quality service/products AND at a low cost, is humble AND confident, is fast AND diligent, is generous AND logical, is tenacious AND flexible, the list can go on and on and can really be applied to all spheres of life.

I have had ups and downs in my career and personal life, but ever since I consistently started applying this doctrine the overall trajectory has being up.

“Art, thank you for being a friend and mentor, your doctrine will have an everlasting effect on me. It continues to make me a better husband, father, design engineer and design manager. The doctrine is touching others and changing lives beyond what you realize.

We will continue spreading the doctrine of AND!”

Praful Madhani — "In my opinion, Art is a “Magic Man” when it comes to building relationships and leadership development.  I have known Art for more than 15 years, and he is one of the best mentors and human beings that I know. He has guided me during my entire career starting from when I was an engineer to now as a Director of Analog Infrastructure at a major institute. I cannot thank him enough for all the guidance and help he has given to me. The best thing about him is that he would never make you feel little or obligated. Being a Vice President with lots of responsibility, Art always finds time to mentor people and does it with pleasure. The thing that I like most about him is that he has never forgotten where he has come from, and never shies away in talking about his background. On the contrary, he uses it to inspire people.  Art has not just helped me to climb my career ladder, but has also helped me to become a better human being. That’s why giving him the title of “Magic Man” is truly appropriate."

Tracy Hamilton — "I met Art five years ago.  He was a guest speaker at a leadership event sponsored by TI. We initially connected as fellow Southern Jaguar alumni. Art's speech focused on the primary characteristics of a leader. I wrote these on a ragged piece of paper, which is even more ragged and also faded, but I still carry this list and I've tried to "live it" every day. Art has been a mentor, counselor, confidant, and supporter. He taught me to not only ask for what I want, but more importantly HOW to ask. And he cheered me on, regardless of how things turned out.

The last item on the characteristics of a leader list was THANK YOU. Two simple words that carry a lot of weight and mean so much. It is with much respect and appreciation that I say Thank You for the time you spent with me and each person you mentor."

Chanceé Lundy, Principal / Co-owner Nspiregreen LLC. — "Because of him, I said, “YES!” Graduating from college and starting a new career hundreds of miles away from home can be quite intimidating. When I received an offer for my first job, Art George called and offered to be my personal mentor, which certainly sweetened the deal. Art has been a voice of reason and wisdom. He has provided valuable practical advice and challenged me to push beyond my own perceived limitations. His approach to goal setting, technical excellence as well as people management and development shaped me into my job as an engineer and into the small business owner I am today. I owe an incredible debt of gratitude to Art for being a positive motivating force in my life."

Laura S. — "I had the privilege of working with Art for several years while I was a product line manager. Art helped me to navigate the corporate culture, and to recognize the lay of the land. He was a sounding board for thinking problems through, and by offering me a different perspective, he helped me to identify new solutions to the challenges I was facing. One of the best things about Art is how positive and inspiring he is. I always left Art’s office feeling encouraged and confident. Art shares his experience and wisdom openly and generously. He helped me become a more effective manager as well as a better person."
